Leap Year

PostcardLeapYearBeCarefulClara1908First off, we would like to wish the people that were born on February 29th a Happy Birthday! It’s not often you guys and gals celebrate your real birthday.

History

The history of Leap year can be taken as far as the Egyptians ancient astronomy. The 365- day calendar was made through the process of how many days it takes the earth to rotate around the sun. The flaw in that equation though, it takes the earth about 365 1/4 days. To synchronize the solar year with the calendar, that extra spare change adds an extra day every four years.

This is where it gets complicated. Like we said, it takes about 365 1/4 days. So the Leap year will be absent three times every 400 years.

Other Traditions

It has been a tradition since the 19th century where women can propose to men. It was first practiced by Scotland in the 1200’s. What if the man says no? If the man turns down the woman’s proposal it is customary for him to buy her 12 pairs of gloves, one for every month to hide the naked ring finger.

People that were born on February 29th are welcomed by The Honor society of Leap Year Day Babies to their community.
