What is a thermostat and how does it work?

A thermostat is a device that controls the heating and cooling of an air conditioning or a heating system installed in a home, office, restaurant, or any buildings that requires one.

There are two types of thermostats: mechanical and digital, which relies on air currents to work. A digital thermostat are programmable, which allows the user to set different temperatures at different time during the day or night. A mechanical, however, requires the temperature to be physically changed and activated by the user.

A mechanical thermostat has several types of sensor technology that helps gauge the temperature, such as bimetallic stripe, wax pellets, bulbs with gas or tubes filled with air. Each of these will react to temperature changes and trigger the proper switch to lower or raise the temperature. Mercury was once used in thermostats, but have been discontinued due to its dangers.

Majority of the homes now have a digital thermostats. Temperatures are read by the sensors which tells the devices to turn on or off depending on the set or programmed temperature. This can be extremely convenient as the temperature can be set then forgotten. Ideally, the comfortable temperature is set to about 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21.1 Celsius). Any higher or lower is dependent on the user.
