Asteroid Nearly Collides with Earth

An asteroid estimated at 100 feet across (or 30 meters) safely squeeked past the Earth Wednesday evening on March 5th. It was said that the asteroid was soaring fewer than 218,000 miles from Earth. Doesn’t that sound far? Well, think about this: the average distance between the Earth and the Moon is close to 293,000 miles.

With those numbers, the Moon is actually farther from the Earth compared with the asteroid. If it had come in between the Moon and the Earth, everyone would’ve been able to see this behemoth of an asteroid soaring in at 33,000 miles per hour.

The asteroid was tracked February 28th and named 2014 DX110.
